Wild Andean bear by Robyn Appleton in Peru

Wild Andean bear by Robyn Appleton in Peru

The work of bear biologist Robyn Appleton in Peru will be profiled in BEARTREK, but we need your help to support her work, and film it in January 2009. Her project is unprecedented and has amazing access to wild bears (they have rarely been filmed in the wild before, and never this close up). Robyn works closely with local villagers where she has been adopted as “family”. She’s helped the people there through bear conservation by hiring them onto her project. Much of what she is learning is new to science and we are doing all we can to support her work – financially, and by bringing the plight of the threatened Andean bear to the world’s attention through film and the web.

Wildlife Media has also provided a satellite radio collar to monitor one of her bear’s movements, paid for salaries for local help, and made general operating cost donations to Robyn’s work. In addition, Wildlife Media’s John Taylor paid for a village gate and fence to keep poachers out of the area, and Wildlife Media’s Annie Mize helped pay for Robyn’s recent radio collaring trip to Peru.

Watch a clip from Joe Pontecorvo’s exploratory mission to Peru where he managed to capture one of these super-elusive animals on film like never before.

A rare sighting indeed – Joe Pontecorvo, Annie Mize, and Chris Morgan from the Wildlife Media team recently had an opportunity to connect with Siew te Wong (BEARTREK Borneo demo reel fame), and Robyn Appleton (Peruvian Andean bear project – our next film location) in Seattle. It was a little bit like a family reunion – having all of these people on the same continent is a rare thing, let alone the same city! It was a wonderful way to catch up on news from Borneo and strategize for Peru. The team energy is electric – we feel like our combined efforts are making a big difference for bears internationally and we are honored to be working with Wong and Robyn.
