Wildlife Media’s Chris Morgan and Joe Pontecorvo set off this week on a 5-month adventure to film the bears of Alaska – thanks to PBS / WNET NATURE.  The two filmmakers will shoot on location in five dramatic and diverse Alaskan ecosystems: coastal, urban, mountain, tundra, and pack ice.  Once released, the show is expected to reach several million homes worldwide!

The film is primarily Chris’ personal journey and exploration into the world of Alaska’s bears.  It will feature the state’s three bear species – black, grizzly/brown, and polar bears – and the challenges many face, from climate change to urban sprawl.

The show will also incorporate the larger filmmaking team as part of the story itself – from the bush pilots that transport Chris and company to the guides and trackers that assist him on his journey.  This “behind-the-scenes” element won’t overwhelm the film, but give the documentary a more real and spontaneous flavor as the trials and tribulations of the filmmakers and crew are captured on film.

We’re very pleased that it was Wildlife Media’s epic and entertaining 20-min. BEARTREK demo reel that led PBS to sign Chris and Joe.  If you haven’t seen the demo or new BEARTREK trailer yet, go here to see what’s getting heads to turn.  Plus, check back here for a link to the blog PBS is creating.  Chris and Joe will be sharing their Alaskan filming, travel, and bear experiences in between shoot locations.
